Graduate story: Maggie Alcaraz, Class of 2018

May 9, 2018

When Margarita Alcaraz (Maggie) joined NNU’s community as a freshman, she started a new tradition by becoming the first person in her family to attend college. Although she was a strong student with plans to study social work and pursue music, finances were a huge concern for her and her family—as they are for many first generation students. But despite the cost, NNU just felt like home. “Whenever I am on campus,” she said, “the people make me feel like I’m part of a family, and it is such an amazing feeling.”

Maggie continues, “As my senior year came along, NNU was always the one that was constantly making sure I was okay and making a relationship with me. When financial aid time came around, they were the ones who said, ‘We’re going to fight for you to come here,’ so it was an easy choice after that.”

Now at the end of her four years on campus, Maggie hasn’t wasted a minute of her NNU experience. “I think my time here at NNU has definitely helped open my eyes to the world in general. I didn’t grow up a Nazarene, so that in and of itself was a completely different world. Different experiences from my San Francisco trip with the social work department to studying abroad to doing service projects around the community have helped me meet people, see different experiences and situations, and put myself more in people’s shoes of ‘What would I be doing if I didn’t have the privilege of getting an education from NNU?’

“I feel like in ten years, I definitely will remember NNU as a self-discovery journey of not necessarily trying to find who I am but more a reassurance of who I am and what I believe in and what my core values are.”

Regardless of where Maggie goes next— she hopes a public policy internship in Washington, D.C.—she says, “NNU will forever be home.”
