NNU to honor Dr. Phyllis Perkins Howard

June 13, 2017

Northwest Nazarene University will honor Dr. Phyllis Perkins Howard with the Wesley Order of Servant Leaders Award at NNU’s Alumni Luncheon on June 25 during the Church of the Nazarene’s General Assembly in Indianapolis, Indiana. Howard, a 1956 graduate of NNU in business administration, has dedicated her life to serving others, her church and God. She has mentored hundreds, if not thousands, through her work as an educator, missionary, author and administrator.

The Wesley Order of Servant Leaders Award is presented to individuals whose life and accomplishments reflect the spirit and practice of servant leadership, which was modeled by Jesus Christ and mirrored in the life of John Wesley. This award reflects the heart of Northwest Nazarene University’s mission. Dr. Perkins Howard will be only the fourth recipient of this award.

Howard has degrees from Arizona State University, Oregon State University and Northwest Nazarene University, and has held faculty, staff and administrative positions at NNU, Nazarene Bible College and Nazarene Theological Seminary. She has also has served in a myriad of diverse service-related roles from secretary to U.S. Senator Henry Dworshak to missionary for the Church of the Nazarene in Japan to general director of Nazarene World Mission Society (now Nazarene Mission International). Currently, she serves as chaplain for the St. Louise Chapel at Meadow Lake Village Retirement Center in Meridian Idaho.

NNU President Joel Pearsall said, “It is not every day we meet a person like Phyllis Perkins Howard. Her commitment to God and her service to others is an example to all of us. Phyllis has spent countless hours mentoring, caring for and investing in others locally, nationally and internationally. Phyllis continues to serve and will do so as long as she has breath. It is with great pleasure that we will honor Dr. Perkins Howard with the Wesley Order of Servant Leaders Award. Phyllis is a wonderful example of Christ-like character and what it means to fully embody the mission and values of NNU.”
